All About Nurturing Mama & Shandli

Shandli

I am so excited to introduce myself to you and tell you the purpose of starting these services for Mamas! I started my journey of learning and specializing in pelvic health and pregnancy/postpartum 11+ years ago. I knew this is what I wanted to get into after hearing about it my second year of physical therapy school. I wanted to truly make an impact on someone's quality of life, and especially the ones who are looked over. I found my love working with mamas  at the start of my career when I had multiple mamas come in to the clinic with back/pelvic pain, but they still had to function with babies attached to them or running away from them (haha)! Mamas, we are so important, in so many ways. We matter! Our families, friends, elderly, churches, schools, and society depend on us. We deserve to be our best by being fully supported, which might include getting others to help us (weird, right?) whether it be through pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum education, physical therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, nutritionists, chiropractic care, or mental health services. So instead of feeling like we have to be everything for everybody as independent, modern-day mamas, honestly, we mamas should be cared for and nurtured by a support village. Nurturing Mama (NM) would be honored to be part of that village.

Nurturing Mama is here to take care of mama, and when mama is taken care of then baby is being taken care.

Tending to yourself during pregnancy is essential for your long-term health and vitality—and for baby’s well-being, too. NM is here to help you lay the groundwork for an easeful postpartum experience by preparing you for birth and the days after birth. Nurturing Mama provides a safe space for the birthing person to experience evidence-based guidance and support for healing from a caring and supportive educator and physical and massage therapist. There is no judgement, and all bodies are welcome. Your home program will fit easily into your day to improve your quality of movement and life, so that you never feel guilty about not doing your exercises. As research shows that exercise/movement and patient education are the two most effective interventions for positive long-term outcomes, this is what NM implements into each treatment session in conjunction with hands-on interventions indicated to assist in rebalancing the body. NM is here to empower mamas in their pregnant and postpartum bodies and facilitate healthy and strong movement.

Nurturing Mama services are made to be easily accessible for all mamas by delivering sessions conveniently to the comfort of your own home or virtually. By design, NM appointments are easy for mamas who cannot find a babysitter (though sessions are a bit more scattered), new mamas who do not want to get their newborn out and about, mamas who want to learn how to do activities in their own environment, and those who desire accountability and personalized support. Nurturing Mama's educational classes are presented in the University of Evansville physical therapy lab at the Stone Family Center for Health Services. Graciously, U of E has allowed NM to utilize their exercise balls, tables, hospital bed, etc... in order to truly practice many of the techniques taught in the classes to prepare for birth.

I have recently been certified as a Perinatal Health Specialist, which is advanced training to enhance maternal outcomes before and after birth including reducing postpartum risk factors, empowering patients to manage their recovery to avoid unnecessary complications, encourage early function in the hospital and at home after delivery, and improve awareness of early rehab during pregnancy and after birth to optimize 4th trimester recovery and return to activity. I have also completed multiple continuing education classes to truly specialize in this realm of obstetric (OB) and pelvic health PT (the APTA's Pelvic Health Section for both pelvic floor and OB, Herman & Wallace, biofeedback through Marquette University, Sarah Duvall’s Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist program, Munira Hundai’s InCore Method program, SpinningBabies, and many more).

Other than being a passionate childbirth educator and pelvic health therapist, I am also a certified lymphedema therapist, working with many people with cancer and post-treatment and post-other medical procedures such as Cesarean deliveries, tummy tucks, mommy makeovers, Brazilian butt lifts, etc… whom benefit from manual lymphatic drainage to help promote the body’s healing system. Since 2010, I have been a licensed massage therapist. I pursued this during my undergraduate years in athletic training to help me become a more “hands-on” eventual physical therapist, and it truly has gifted me to be able to feel what the body’s tissues need. I received my massage therapy certification from Bodyworks Massage Institute in 2010, my bachelor of science in athletic training in 2011 from the University of Evansville, and my doctorate in physical therapy in 2013 also from the University of Evansville.

As mama to two wild, intelligent boys-Owen (8) & Liam (6) and two guinea pig girls-Pip & Squeak (3), wife to my hard-working and funny husband-Brad, and follower of Christ, I am overwhelmingly blessed. I love learning, playing board/card games, and being outside (but also snuggling with my boys under a blanket by the fireplace). Sweet tea, dill pickles, and Kit Kats are my jam. My passion is in nurturing mamas (at all stages) and those with cancer/survivors.
